答案 The table reveals the ownership of five consumer durables by Chinese residents from 1990 to 2008. Overall, all these household appliances have showed a trend of general increase over this period. Television and vacuum cleaner were already commonly possessed by Chinese residents in 1990 (90% and 83% respectively) and the ownerships were on a constant rise later on. By 2008, 98% of the households owned a television compared with 94% of those who have a vacuum cleaner. Likewise, not many families possessed a refrigerator and a washing machine in 1990 (72% and 66% respectively), and the percentages went above 90% after the stable increases for 18 consecutive years. The most significant increase took place in the rising processes of telephone, of which the ownership tripled in 2008 (95%) compared with that in 1990 (31%). The overall rising trend of the ownership reveals the improvement of people’s well - being both spiritually and physically over the past two decades. Televisions and telephones strengthen the connection with outer world and thus bring people spiritual comforts. Vacuum cleaners, refrigerators and washing machines free people from heavy housework and make life easier. To conclude, the popularization of those appliances is a signal of social progression.
