答案 Smoking Most Chinese men smoke. Out-of excitement or anger, they smoke more. Research shows that smoking causes premature death, cancer and heart disease, although a few physicians and researchers are not convinced. They consider the respiratory diseases and cancers may be caused by other factors such as atmospheric pollution, stress, food additives or pesticides, but gradually research is eliminating these factors. How is the body affected? As the smoke is inhaled, its components—gases, chemicals, ash particles, nicotine and black tar, are deposited in the lungs, particularly where the air tubes divide. This is where most lung cancer starts. Smoking also affects the heart and blood vessels by narrowing the small veins. Smokers commonly die of heart disease. All smoking is dangerous. Cigarettes are worse than pipes or cigars while filtered or low tar tobacco remains dangerous. Nowadays, people all agree that smoking is a bad habit and equivalent to committing suicide. Many people are trying to get rid of it, and actually a large number of them have succeeded. But with the disappearance of old smokers, newcomers join the army. And it is a disturbing fact that most of the newcomers are teenagers. Therefore, it is important to sustain our efforts to ban smoking.
