On Team Spirit Du Bing Nobody is living alone in society. Therefore, it is safe to say that all are living in a team, or rather, teams, where they interact with each other in one way or another to serve their own interests, or the interests of their teams, or both. In the teams, people are divided into those who have team spirit and those who do not. Team spirit obviously involves sacrifice of one’ s own interests when they are in conflict with those of his team. For example, when a student who plays a role in a school drama is asked to spend an evening rehearsing it with his fellow actors, but in the meantime he wants to finish an interesting book, he will choose to work with his team rather than enjoying his book, if he has team spirit and is willing to sacrifice his own interests. But team spirit is more than that. The idea seems to be that any compliant person hesitating to claim his or her own rights can do that, if that is all that is required. No, the idea here seems to be that one who has team spirit should always give one’s team’s interests top priority, and, more importantly, that one should always be ready to serve the interests positively. For example, the student, if he really has a strong team spirit, should not only postpone reading his book but also try his best to play his role well in the play, that is, to contribute everything he has to the play to make it a success. Team spirit seems to be nothing less than the willingness to get involved, and, more importantly, to do so in a positive, productive way.
