The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement have gained a third emblem, opening the way for Israel to join the global relief network. Representatives of countries which signed the Geneva Convention voted by a two-thirds majority to adopt a diamond-shaped red crystal on a white background as the new symbol. The move also allows Israel’s official ambulance service to operate alongside the Palestinian Red Crescent in the occupied Palestinian territories. Israel will use the symbol outside its internationally recognized borders instead of the red Star of David, which Arab states have always refused to accept.
