答案 The above picture provides us with a thought-provoking scene: at the one end of a seesaw losing its balance, there are 15 men who are proposing to a girl sitting at the other end. This drawing clearly implies that China is confronted with the problem of the sex ratio imbalance. Someone may think that the worsening imbalance in the sex-ratio of newborns in China is a result of the country’s family planning policy. However, other eastern countries including India and Pakistan also have unbalanced newborn sex ratios even though they do not have China’s type of family planning policy. Therefore, I reckon the reasons for the increasingly unbalanced sex ratio have always been Chinese traditional preference for sons, lower levels of development and an inadequate social security network in rural areas, and the abuse of sex selective abortions. To solve the problem, with promoting rural productivity and improving people’s living standards, China’s government should firstly improve the social security system which hasn’t covered a majority of rural residents so that elderly farmers traditionally relying on their boys when they get old are properly cared for. Furthermore, the government should take strict measures to prevent and punish illegal gender testing of fetuses and abortions which are not for medical purposes. Only in this way, can we halt the growing sex ratio imbalance and keep our social stability.
