W: So what is a stress interview?
M: It is a tactic used by some companies or individual hiring managers to measure how you will handle stress.
W: Will we be told ahead of time or we might just suddenly find ourselves dealing with it?
M: That is the point, and the answer is no. Chances are that the interviews could fire off questions very quickly without giving you much time to think about your answers. Or they may take turns grilling you. Usually they just try to discomfort you in different ways and watch your responses in different situations.
W: Yes, there are many more things a company could do during a stress interview! But what can we do?
M: Bear in mind that the stress situations are a deliberately planned strategy to test you. All these are in fact harmless tests to unearth your real temperament, and then you can undergo this exercise with a smile and respond well.
W: But in the face of a group of them, and a number of questions...
M: Your best bet is of course to remain calm and try not to allow them to see you sweat. That just might be what they are looking for to rule you out from further consideration for the job. Don’t give them what they are looking for.
W: Sure, and then?
M: Try to take further control by adjusting to the treatment you are receiving. If, for example, you’re being constantly interrupted while giving answers to questions, try to maintain eye contact with the person asking the questions and keep your answers brief to avoid being cut off.
