    "I meant to take good care of your book, Mr. Smith," said the boy, "but I’ve damaged(损坏) it, and now I want to make it right with you. What shall I do to make up for it?"
    "Why, what happened to it, Jack?" asked the farmer, as he took the book which he had lent Jack. "It looks as if it had been out through all last night’s rain. How come you forgot, and left it out?"
    "This is what happened, Mr. Smith," answered Jack.
    "I sat up late to read it, and when I went to bed, I put it away carefully in a little opening between two logs(原木) in the wall of our cabin(小木屋). When I woke up I took it out. You can’t imagine how I felt when I saw it. I’m sorry, Mr. Smith, and I want to make up for it, if you can tell me how, for I have not got any money to pay for it. "
    "Well," said Mr. Smith, "come and work on my farm three days, and the book is yours."
Jack felt very sorry for damaging the book.
