Should the Retirement Age be Pushed Back? [1] Recently, China is considering whether or not to raise the retirement age, which arouses a great controversy. And, until now, [2] no final conclusion has been made to the question. In fact, the reason why disagreements exist lies in the inappropriate retiring system. [3] In my opinion, we should resort to a more flexible retiring system so as to create a fair and harmonious society and effectively make full use of human resources. And the following are the details to support my point of view. [4] First and foremost, people vary greatly from each other in terms of health condition, working sector and working environment. [5] To be more specific, [6] some people, say at the age of 60, may be very weak and fragile while others are strong and energetic; [6] some people undertake heavy work throughout their lives while others may only do trifles all the time; [6] some start their work at 18 [6] while others are still learning at 30. If all people listed above retire at the same age, it may be both [7] objectively impossible and rather unfair to the former group. Therefore, with regards to equality as well as possibility, I hold that it is quite necessary to adopt a more flexible retiring system. That is, people in poor health or undertaking physical work can retire at an earlier age, while people who are healthy and sound or engaged in mental work can proportionally postpone their retiring age so as to complete their contribution to the society. [8] Second, the unified retiring standard may lead to an unseen waste of talent. As is known to all, under the present mode of education, it takes a long time and costs a lot to train people with high professional qualifications. And it has been common to see that a doctor can not go to work until the age of 30. If these people retire as young as people with low education, it is [9] no less than giving up a large fortune obtained at great expense. Especially now, when people with high professional qualifications are in severe shortage, any waste of talents will intensify the situation. In short, a more flexible retiring system will [10] not only help to realize our goal of equality and humanity but also meet the demand for talents by our economic development. Therefore, we can say that a more flexible retiring system is appropriate for China’s conditions now.
