The study of animals in parks and in wild has given a deeper knowledge of their habits: the result has been a great improvement in the way they are treated, housed and bred. For example, most animals are now kept in groups because it has discovered that, like people, they are happier in the company of their fellows. It has been recognized also that as they are complicated creatures, keeping them happy enough to flourish and multiply in captivity (囚禁,被关) is a complicated operation. Zoo directors, keepers, and veterinarians (兽医) have countless stories to tell about the problems that have to be solved before romance can bloom in the zoo. Some animals will not breed without a special diet; others must feel far from human presence, and others need large spaces for their courtship dances. Some males insist on fighting to win their mate. Then there is the question of personal preferences, as was demonstrated by the female panda of the London Zoo, and the male panda in Moscow. After long and difficult discussions between representatives of the two countries involved, it was eventually decided that the two bears would take turns flying to each other’s residence in England and in the USSR. The humans went to considerable expenses and trouble to bring the bears together, but they could not get them interested in each other. It seems that all pandas are hard to please; the Washington Zoo has been struggling with its own pair for years, without much result.
With most animals, however, the breeding programs, which are the second concern of the zoos, work well enough to save vanishing species from complete extinction. The American buffalo, extremely rare thirty years ago, now counts forty thousand head, thanks to the Bronx Zoo, which started breeding them. The Oryx, extinct in its native Arabia, is doing so well in an Arizona park that it has been possible to send a herd back to its original desert.
How are the breeding programs going with most animals?
