答案
In recent years more and more homes are being pushed outwards as the activities of business, government and pleasure tend to be concentrated in the centers of the city. Some people have a preference of living in the city, because they think life in the city is more interesting and exciting than that in the suburbs. However, others hold that the advantages of suburban life outweigh its disadvantages. Although most people are reluctant to move to the outskirts of the city, I feel like living in the suburbs, because the cost of suburban life is much cheaper and there is less pollution in the suburbs. What’s more, the relationship between people is much closer and cozier. It is true that the city can provide more convenience and entertainment, the very reason people can’t bear to part with city life. But the cost for the privilege of living in the city is also high. Compared with the cost of city life, that of suburban life is much cheaper. As an illustration, as the housing problem in the central city gets more serious, people have to pay high rents for very tiny flats, which I would certainly disdain to live in. In addition to the housing expense, people in the city also have to spend plenty of money on food. For example, the price of chicken in the city doubles or even triples that in the suburbs let alone its freshness. So, that is one advantage of suburban life. Another advantage of suburban life lies in that the environment of the suburbs is much cleaner than that of the city. Just think of the places where we live, they are full of petrol fumes and toxic gases, torn by the roar of buses and lorries day and night, and thronged ceaselessly by great crowds. The city is much more polluted than the suburb by the traffic, the people and other facilities. As a contrast, living near the countryside one can enjoy the clean atmosphere, the closeness to nature and the quiet, peaceful surroundings—the essentials of a healthy life. Nothing can be compared, as the pace of modern life is getting faster, with the first crowing of a cock, the twittering of birds at dawn, and the sight of the rising sun glinting on the trees and green fields in the suburbs. Although living in the suburbs you may suffer a little discomfort brought about by the necessity of traveling miles to work every day, the situation will change soon as many highways and subways are being constructed. When picturing these scenes of the suburbs, one should have no reluctance to part with city life. Furthermore, people in the suburbs have a much closer and longer relationship with each other. People in the city are so busy that they have no time to communicate with each other. It is often said that two people living next door in the same apartment have never got a chance to say hello to each other for several years in the city. Moreover, relationships between people in the city are short-lived because of the mobility of the city. People are changing jobs and moving from place to place, so there is no way for them to keep a long-term relationship. That is the reason why so many people in the city are unable to find their husbands or wives. However, things are totally different in the countryside. People have an easy and peaceful life. So, they have more time to communicate with each other. Neighbors care about each other. When one has a problem, others would like to give a hand. Given the differences between city and suburban life concerning people’s relationship, suburban life is much more enjoyable and comfortable than city life. Due to all these reasons, I believe people in the suburbs have a much higher quality of life. The new suburban life is fast becoming a predominant pattern of living in most cities; and with the improvement of traffic and the perfection of services, it will prove to hold great superiority over city life.
