Most people think cancer is a disease of rich western countries. No longer it is now. More than half of the 6 million people who die from cancer each year are in developing countries. Cancer is now one of the big killers of people over five years of age in the third world.
The main reason is that the poor are living longer than they used to. As infectious disease such as smallpox and typhoid are progressively contained, the poor die instead from illness associated with middle- and old-age.
The pattern of cancers among the world’s poorest people is still very different from that of the rich. In industrialized countries people die from lung, intestinal (肠的) and prostate (前列腺的) cancers as a consequence of smoking, alcohol abuse and high fat diets. In the third world the most prevalent forms of cancer are those of the liver, mouth, esophagus (食道) and cervis (子宫颈). These cancers are associated with poor living conditions and undernourishment.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reckons that the third world problem will get worse as the poor adopt the lifestyle of the rich and become subject to western-type cancers.
A third of all cancers are preventable and a third are curable if detected early enough. WHO is proposing a worldwide campaign on the link between smoking and cancer. However, an anti-smoking campaign is bound m meet resistance both from governments which raise big revenues from tobacco and from western cigarette manufactures for whom developing countries are an increasingly important market.
If the lifestyle of the rich were prevalent in the third world, what would happen there?
