答案 According to the figures issued by the European Economic Commission, the world’s steel output of last year added up to more than 750 million tons. Compared with that of 1995, it decreased by 0.2 percent. As far as China is concerned, it has surpassed Japan and the U.S. in steel production. Its steel output reached slightly more than 100 million tons in 1996, about twice that of Russia. Clearly, China ranked first in steel production in the world last year. There are two main reasons for the rapid increase in steel production in China. In the first place, with the development of industry, agriculture and transport service an increasing amount of steel is needed to make different kinds of machinery and equipment. Therefore, the Government attaches great importance to the expansion of steel industry. Secondly, the introduction and application of high tech have remarkably enhanced the efficiency of production and reduced the cost of output, which also contributed to the development of steel industry. As for the future prospect of steel production in the world, generally speaking, it involves a downward direction in some of the developed countries because a variety of synthetic materials are being developed to take the place of steel.
