In China, there is a special social mentality called ’’resentment toward the rich", meaning the general public is, to a lesser or greater extent, holding grudge against those rich people. This resentment has been growing for the past years. What do you think are the major causes that lead to this mentality? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

On Resentment Towards the Rich According to a survey, as many as 96% of the public said they felt resentful towards the rich. The recent reports, like some wealthy people flaunting their luxurious possession and lifestyle online, add fuel to the fire. As far as I see it, the resentment towards the rich results from the widening gap between the rich and the poor and also the impression that "rich guys usually get their way". First of all, the hatred against the rich is principally caused by the increasingly widening gap between the rich and the poor in China. With the reform and opening-up policy as well as the market-based economy, China has achieved great economic growth. However, while some people have profited from such growth, others are still struggling for basic necessities. The rich and the poor are gradually polarized in Chinese society, which has led to intensifying social conflicts. In fact, nowadays, the mindset of hatred towards the wealthy is frequently spotted. People feel that the gap is unfair and that the luxurious lifestyle of rich people is unacceptable, especially when some of them cannot really justify where their money comes from. Therefore, it is natural that people would feel angry when they eyewitness the contrast between a rich young man driving a splendid car to impress his girlfriend and a man of similar age cultivating farmland to make ends meet. Furthermore, rich people are disliked because they seem to be able to do whatever they want, even it is illegal. People are no longer surprised by the following news. One is that a certain rich businessman bought out the entire theatre tickets just to make sure that he and his mistress were left alone to enjoy the show. Even worse, another piece of news says that an 18-year-old lad who had caused a car accident was released, because his loaded dad had bribed officials to get him out of law enforcement. Similar news coverage goes on and on. That is why ordinary people are amazed and then disgusted by the special treatment rich people enjoy. It seems to validate the saying, "Money makes the world go around." As for the average people, being less rich, they have to suffer from the inconvenience and unfair treatment incurred by the wealthy and privileged ones. In conclusion, the growing wealth gap and the ever-present injustice both inflame the public anger against the rich. Rich people should abide by laws and think more about repaying the society to ease this rich-poor tension.
