These changes are bringing a new look to advertising. Couples with children as well as older people are now commonly shown in ads for everything from cars to frozen foods.
    Films are changing, too. Two recent box-office hits that appeal to an older audience deal with subjects of interest to adults. The aging of the population is also producing a drop in the crime rate. Studies show that young people are more likely to be lawbreakers. As their numbers decrease, so does crime. Spending preferences are being affected. Researchers say that many communities are putting more emphasis on keeping property taxes down, even if that means spending less on schools. Schools have become less important and long-term health care more important as America becomes a society with fewer children and more old people.
