Body Language Around the World

Our new foreign students are going to arrive very soon, and here are some ways to welcome them.
How close do you stand when you talk to a friend? You can stand close to people in the Middle East but don’t stand too close to North Americans! Give them more personal space.
How about touching people? Chinese girls often walk arm in arm with their friends. South Americans sometimes hold your arm when they talk to you, so you can’t move away! But in Britain many people don’t like other people to touch them at all.
Do you look at people when you talk? In some places, it isn’t polite to look at people when you talk, but in other countries it isn’t polite to look somewhere else. In Britain and the US, people usually look at each other when they talk.
And how do you say goodbye? That’s easy, wave to say goodbye. But be careful! In Greece, it’s not at all polite! In fact, it’s very rude!

Major Steps: Step 1 Pre-reading (3 minutes) Show some pictures about body language, and ask students to guess their meanings. After that, ask students "How much do you know about body language around the world?" and have a free talk with them. (Justification: This step can draw students’ attention, stimulate their interest in the topic and activate their background knowledge.) Step 2 While-reading (10 minutes) (1) Ask students to read the passage quickly to get the main idea of each paragraph. For example: Paragraph 1: Introduction. Paragraph 2: How close you should stand when talking with a friend. Paragraph 3: How to touch people. Paragraph 4: How to look at people when you talk. Paragraph 5: How to say goodbye. (2) Ask students to read the passage again and find out the details to tell True or False. ①You can stand close to people in the Middle East but don’t stand too close to North Americans. ②British people sometimes hold your arm when they talk to you. ③In Britain and the US, people usually don’t look at each other when they talk. ④In Greece, it’s rude to wave to say goodbye. (Justification: This step can help students get the main idea of each paragraph and grasp the details. Therefore, they can have a better understanding of the passage.) Step 3 Post-reading (7 minutes) (1) Ask students to work in groups of four to present the body language in the passage to each other and brainstorm more kinds of body language in China. (2) Let students have a discussion in groups: Why do the body language have differences in different countries and places? What can we do when we encounter these differences? (Justification: This step can help students consolidate what they have learned and raise their awareness of cultural differences.)
