Why did John apologize to Ms. Jones?

W. I heard that John quit his job this morning.
M: How do you know that?
W: I overheard him talking to Ms. Jones when I passed by the office. She was very annoyed about it.
M: What did John say to her?
W: He apologized again and again to Ms. Jones for not notifying her earlier.

M: I realize that short hair is fashionable these days, but you looked so much nicer with long hair.
W: Long hair may look nice, but during the summer it’s so uncomfortable. Even after I bought an air conditioner my hair still bothered me.
