    According to some statistics, by the end of 2009, the resident(常住人口)in Beijing has reached 17 million, not to mention the large floating population and the number is becoming bigger. Do you think the population in Beijing should be controlled? Why or why not?

答案 Recent surveys have found that the total population of Beijing has exceeded 17. 4 million, not to mention the large number of floating population. Many people argue that Beijing is not the largest city in the world, and the population growth will exert positive effects on construction of Beijing. However, in my view, Beijing could not sustain its population growth and the population of Beijing should be controlled. The reasons are as follows. To begin with, Beijing is a city with very limited natural resources, especially fresh water resources, which becomes a bottleneck restraining its economic and social development. Just as some experts say, Beijing’s population is already approaching the limit the resource-poor city can bear, seriously inhibiting its sustainable development. Furthermore, additional social stresses may also occur because of the population explosion. The rapid population growth of Beijing will increase the cost of the city residents living, which also affect the health development of the urban economy. In addition, the rapid population growth and the large number of floating population will bring a lot of new challenges and difficult problems to security management of urban population. More and more city residents complain that the large number of floating population has brought many serious problems like crime and prostitution. In view of all aspects mentioned above, the population of Beijing should be controlled. And just as we all know, the population growth is going on, while water, land, transportation and other conditions are restricted. Therefore, government departments need to make relevant policies to control the population of Beijing.
