The United States is a country of immigrants. After the Native Americans, all people have an immigrant past except African slaves and their descendants (后代). The first immigrants were Europeans, and they arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. They arrived from England on a ship named the Mayflower to escape religious persecution (迫害).
The first European immigrants formed thirteen colonies (殖民地) under England. The thirteen colonies were not happy with the mother country, England. The colonies were paying taxes bu t did not have power. They decided to fight and won their independence. The new Americans wrote the Declaration of Independence. It said that all men were created equal, but it did not include Indians, African slaves or women. The colonies celebrated their independence from England on July 4, 1776. They became a new country, and George Washington was the first president.
In the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s, many immigrants came to the United States from different countries. Everyone wanted jobs, freedom, education, and better opportunities. From the 1950s to 2003, many new immigrants came because of war, or for economic or political reasons. Many of these people were Asian or Hispanic. The United States Census said that the total population reached 300 million in 2006. Some people think that these new immigrants contribute to the U.S. economy and help keep prices down. Some Americans think that the United States needs immigrants’ energy and positive attitude about working in Sow-level or difficult jobs. Other people disagree with this idea and think these immigrants take the jobs that the Americans need or want.
Some people do not welcome the new immigrants because they______.
选项
A、make no contributions to the U.S.
B、take the jobs the Americans need
C、work in low-level jobs in the U.S.
D、expand American population
答案
B
解析
本题为细节题。要求找出一些人不欢迎新移民的原因。解题关键是文章最后三句话:“Some people think that these new immigrants contribute to the U.S.economy and help keep prices down. Some Americans think that the United States needs immigrants’energy and positive attitude about working in low-level or difficult jobs.Other people disagree with this idea and think these immigrants take the jobs that the Americans need or want.(有的人认为这些新移民对美国的经济做出了贡献,并使得物价保持低水平。有的美国人认为美国需要移民的力量,以及他们对待低等的、艰苦工作的乐观态度。而有的美国人则持不同看法,他们认为这些移民抢了美国人的工作。)”。故答案选B,也就是, “抢走了美国人的工作。”选项A.make no contributions to the U.S.与原文叙述相反;选项C.work in low—level jobs in the U.S.正是美国人接纳移民的原因;选项D.expand American population并未在文中提及。
