问题             Bruce Lee Started a New Era of China in US Movies
Bruce Lee was one of China’s great 20 century heroes. Known for his wonderful kungfu performance, he represented in both life and on film the underdog (弱者) who succeeds a-gainst all the odds.
In the movies, he could heroically defeat 100 enemies at once. In life, he was the first movie star to break through Hollywood’s stereotypical casting of Chinese as subservient characters.
Lee formed his fighting spirit as a child. Born sickly in a San Francisco hospital, he was burdened with a female name, Li Junfan. His mother chose the name to drive away the evil spirits to snatch valuable male children.
Determined to rise above these obstacles, Lee devoted his life to turning his small body into a large weapon. Martial arts and bodybuilding quickly became obsessions.
Perhaps Lee’s legacy is the cult of the body, the almost mystical belief that adversity can be overcome through exercise, diet, meditation and weight training. For many, Lee represents the belief that the body can be developed for killer perfection and immortal endurance.
Despite all the special effects money poured into movies such as The Matrix, no one has yet matched the beauty of his violence. He began his film career as a child actor in Hong Kong, appearing in 20 movies. At 18, he traveled to America where he taught the Wing Chun style of martial arts, or yongchunquan. On his return to Hong Kong, he began to make films that set box-office records in Asia.
He died at 32 under a cloud of controversy. According to Time magazine, he died of a swelling of the brain, reportedly caused by a strange reaction to a prescription painkiller.
A month later, his first US film, Enter the Dragon, was released. It’s the American action movie Lee had longed to make. It would earn more than $ 200 million and transforming him into a legend.
