E Are you satisfied with the environment you are living in? A I’m dissatisfied with the environment I’m living in now. I’m a university student in Beijing. Actually I think the environment on campus is very good, because there are many trees and plenty of grass on campus. For example, at dusk, we can see many birds flying over the campus. It’s very beautiful. What makes me dissatisfied is the environment of Beijing. Some of Beijing’s rivers are very dirty and smell feculent. Beijing also has sensible sandstorms. This environment problem is getting more and more serious. As the suffusing dust blocks out the sky, enshrouding the city, the storm brings much inconvenience and trouble to people’s daily life and work, and even claims lives in regions where the problem is more serious. E Has your university done anything to protect the campus environment? (If yes, what has it done? /If not, why not?) A Yes, my university attaches great importance to the campus environment. There are many lawns and trees in my university. Workers often mow the lawns and clean the streets on campus. So, the campus’s always kept tidy. There is a very beautiful lake on campus. After lunch, students and teachers always go there to have a walk. Three years ago, the water of this lake was very dirty, and teachers and students often complained about it. Then, my university mobilized all the students and teachers to clean this lake. Firstly, they drained all the water. Secondly, they scooped out the garbage that sunk to the bottom of the lake. Finally, they pumped clean water into the lake. Now the lake has restored its beauty. This is one example of what is being done to pro-tect the campus environment, from which we can see all teachers and students are contributing to the campus environment at protection. E Why is environmental protection important? A To know the importance of environmental protection, you should know the damage done by pollution. Pollution is harmful to human beings. Polluted water causes many kinds of diseases. And sometimes these diseases kill people’s lives. Dirty air or garbage causes stinging eyes and running noses. Pollutants are destructive. They eat away the stone and cause iron to rust. Environmental pollution is more serious in some areas. E Is environmental pollution a local or global problem? (Please explain) B In my opinion, environmental pollution is both a local and global problem. Environmental pollution does great damage to people’s health and drives a growing number of people into poverty. So in many nations, environmental degradation is now recognized as a key barrier to governments’ ability to meet basic needs and sustain living standard. At the global level, almost all of the indicators are negative. Each year now, the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reaches a new high, and the ozone layer grows thinner. Thousands of plant and animal species no longer exist. The world environmental protection has, in a sense, been under way for more than two decades. Grass-roots environmental organizations proliferated in these years. Environmental pollution is a serious problem that needs to be solved by all human beings both on a local and global level. E Which do you think is more important, environmental protection or economic development? B Some people think that the most urgent task is to develop economy on a large scale because many people, especially in rural areas, are living in poverty. They believe only by further balancing and developing our economy can we get rid of poverty and gain overall prosperity. On the other hand, many people insist that environmental protection should be top priority. We have only one mother earth. If our ecological environment is heavily polluted or ruined, we could not survive on this planet. In my opinion, both economy and environment protection are urgent tasks. Without economic development, we would remain backward and possibly be conquered or bullied by other powerful countries. On the other hand without environmental protection, we would lose our home. Therefore, the best solution is to develop environmental-protection-oriented industries and agriculture, killing two birds with one stone.
