By the year 2050, the population will gradually approach its peak, with the percentage of the people ages beyond 60 making up 27.4 percent of the total. It is very likely that the expansion of China’s elderly population will not only bring job opportunities but also pose profound challenges for government and society inevitably. Of course, the change in social structures creates career opportunities in medicine and health professions, and in law and in business as well. Lawyers can specialize in "elder law", and businessmen will see huge opportunities in the elder market because more attention is being paid to the care and comforts of the elderly. Nevertheless, a host of problems brought on by aging population has been growing markedly apparent in our society. The care for senior citizens is badly needed, for their children, burdened with routine jobs in ever-escalating living pace, may have little time to attend to their comforts. Besides, aging can bring about a relative decline in working force in society and in turn fewer people must support the increasing aged population. East and not the least, the aging of population in China that may partly result from the successful implementation of family planning has not been fortunately synchronized with the nation’s economic progress. Given the disadvantages, the aging of China’s population will call for the urgent adoption of drastic counter-measures. No doubt, family care and community services should be encouraged for the benefit of the elderly. The government should attach importance to overall social progress by modifying the backward situation in social security, welfare and service in anticipation of the expansion of elderly population.
