What aspects of staff performance should be appraised and how to make such appraisals — Quality of work It is important to appraise the quality of work performed by the staff. The HR department of the company should set up a system for quality appraisals with considerations of specific job responsibilities for different jobs. — Quantity of work It is also important to appraise the quantity of work performed by the staff. The HR department of the company should set required quantity of work for different jobs and ways for quantifying staff work. — Special contributions It is also important to consider whether a staff member has made any special contributions to the business development of the company, e. g. having creative ideas for new projects, having contracted more clients, etc. ? Whom to be consulted when deciding which staff to be promoted — the immediate line manager or supervisor of the staff member who has been selected for promotion should be consulted. The immediate line manager or supervisor has a better view of the team of staff under his/her leadership or supervision, and knows the performance of each member better, — other members of the team in which the selected staff member has worked should also be consulted. Their comments on the performance of the selected staff member should be considered.
