The Announcement of Seminar Attendance
The Northern University announced today that, beginning in Fall Semester this year, all incoming freshmen will be required to take "Ongoing Orientation" seminars. These seminars will be held in the Student Center, and their purpose will be to facilitate students’ rapid adjustment to college life. According to the school authority, the twice weekly seminars will show students the college cares and will provide practical advice on commonly encountered difficulties: socialization and making contacts would also be "vastly enhanced."
Now hear a conversation between two students.
Question: The man expresses his opinion about the announcement of opening an orientation seminar to all freshman students. State his opinion and explain the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.
W: Wayne, why are you reading the Student Handbook?
M: I’m a volunteer helping the new first-year students in a program called "Forward Freshmen!"
W: You mean that new program in the orientation seminars? What a waste of time if you ask me.
M: Hey! I think the program is helpful. Remember me two years ago? When I was a freshman, I couldn’t adapt to the new campus life and I didn’t even know how to review my notes after class every day.
W: That happened to me also.
M: You see. Besides that, I never did reading till the day before the final exam. As a volunteer I can help new students adjust quickly to college life and encourage them to get into good study habits.
W: So you really like the orientation seminar, don’t you?
M: Of course, I do: moreover, these seminars will help students make friends with those who have common interests. Take me as an example, I am pretty fond of music, and I bet I could find friends who love music as much as I do in the seminar. You know, it took me a long time to make friends when I first came here.
W: Just like you and me?
M: Ha-ha. I’ve met other volunteers with the same interests as me, so will the new students. Besides, they’ll meet people with the same major.
W: Well, you always do something for good reasons.

答案
The university is offering an orientation program for new students. This will be a series of meetings helping them adjust to college life. The student likes the idea so much that he is willing to volunteer to help. First, he thinks this program can help new students acquire good study habits and skills since the first year students are not familiar with the new campus life and have not yet formed a regular study schedule. The program can therefore encourage students to review and update their knowledge about campus life. Second, he points out that it is often a problem for those just beginning college to find someone with common interests. The meetings will help new students in finding new friends on campus. In fact, the man has found some friends loving music as he does. This program will provide new students with a chance to get to know each other in discussing the shared major.
