PART THREE Collaborative task and discussion (about 7 minutes) Interlocutor: Now this part of the test you are going to discuss together. [Interlocutor points to the card showing the task while giving the instructions below.] Interlocutor : You have 30 seconds to read the task carefully, and then 3 minutes to discuss and decide about it together. You should give reasons for your decisions and opinions. You don’t need to write anything. Is that clear? [Interlocutor places the card in front of the candidates.] Interlocutor: I’m just going to listen and then ask you to stop after 3 minutes, Please speak so that we can hear you. [Candidates have about 3 minutes to complete the task.] A:Overseas clients is going to return. We should give them some gifts. Any advice? B:Er, We have choices available. Among them, I recommend traditional Chinese paintings. A:Sounds nice. But I’m not familiar with them. Can you explain it? B:Yes. We have a variety of them, such as human figures, landscape, birds, animals, insects, flowers, and so on. A:Maybe we give them human figures or something. B:How about a picture entiled "Lady Zhaojun Crossing the Frontier". You know, Wang Zhaojun is one of "the four ancient beauties". A:OK. Not bad. Is it original or the way around? I don’t like reproduction. B:It’s a reproduction, but it retains so well the vividness and charm of the original that this is difficult to tell which is the original and which is not. And we do not make them misunderstand that we try to bribe them. A: If so, I’ll take it. [Materials are collected.] [The interlocutor asks one or more questions as appropriate, to extend the discussion.] Interlocutor’s Questions (1) Do you think companies should give gifts to their employees regularly? (Why? /Why not?) 你认为公司应该经常向其员工赠送礼品吗?(为什么?) (1)—Yes, I think so. A gift is actually an expression of "thank you". Employees, when they receive gifts from their employers, will naturally feel respected and loved. That would motivate workers, boost their morale and build loyalty. —No, I don’t think so. Companies should aim to set up a more efficient incentive mechanism, I mean to use more consistent means to build employee loyalty, like internal promotion, paid holidays, insurance, vouchers, etc. (2) Is it a good business practice to give gifts to your clients? (Why? /Why not?) 向客户赠送礼物是否是良好的商务习惯(为什么?) (2)—Yes. Corporate gifts are tokens of appreciation and respect. It’s good business etiquette to send gifts to your clients, as they bring about a feeling of warmth and friendship. So it helps to maintain good business relationship between suppliers and clients. —Not really. In my opinion, gifts are not what your clients expect from you. What really counts is the good service you provide and the quality of your products. I’m worried that some companies would use gifts as a remedy for the poor service they provide. (3) Who are the appropriate people that should receive corporate gifts? (Why?) 哪些人应该收到公司的礼物?(为什么?) (3)—Internally, companies should give gifts to their employees, as a way of showing their gratitude for their employee’s efforts in work. Externally, companies should send gifts to their business partners, suppliers, existing clients and potential clients. In this case, the purpose is to show their appreciation as well as to build customer loyalty. (4) What is the most important when presenting corporate gifts to your clients? (Why?) 公司向客户送礼时,最重要的事项是什么?(为什么?) (4)—When presenting corporate gifts, I think the most important thing is to pay special attention to aesthetics and packaging of the gifts. Whatever your gifts are, the first impression you make has to be a striking one.
