Two people are building their brick towers. The bricklayer on the right quickly completes the main body of his tower whose foundation is made up of only five bricks. He happily and proudly stands on the tower to add the last brick. However, the bricklayer on the left, seemingly unaware of the triumphant expression on his opponent’s face, still endeavors to build the foundation of his tower. Thanks to the solid foundation, he successfully builds a much higher tower dwarfing that of his opponent. The final winner stands high on the top and waves to his opponent who feels deeply ashamed. The above pictures indicate that it is the foundation rather than speed that is essential to achievement and success. Those who skip time-consuming accumulation of basic knowledge may perform well in the beginning but always have difficulty in making further progress. The following example can illustrate this argument. Once there were two boys interested in painting. One worked hard for thirty years to learn painting while the other took crash courses. Finally, the hardworking one gained profound understanding of painting and became a great painter while the other one could only draw simple pictures to entertain himself. Then, how can we apply the wisdom revealed in the pictures to our life? Living in an age when quick success is admired, we should restrain our desire for overnight success and endeavor to build firm foundations to gain long-term success.
