Woman: John - I’ve just heard the company is moving out of these offices. I can’t believe it!
Man: It’s true. They made the .final decision yesterday.
Woman: Who did?
Man: Um well...
Woman: There wasn’t a board meeting yesterday, was there?
Man: I don’t think so. A vote was actually taken by all the heads of departments.
Woman: Ah so it wasn’t just Finance saying what should happen. It usually is... And where are we going? I like it here. I don’t want to move my whole family to a new city none of us knows.
Man: You won’t have to. We’re not moving far away. We’re only going to Kenton...
Woman: Kenton?
Man: You know, that new development. You must have noticed all the new building work going on, off the main road just as you come into the city.
Woman: Oh yes I’ve read about it. Is everyone who works here going, do you know, John?
Man: Almost everyone, you know, Finance, Sales, Public Relations...
Woman: Aha, so I will be going.
Man: Yes, though Customer Services are staying in the city centre for another year...
Woman: ... so the public know where we are...
Man: Exactly. Fiona, it’s going to be great. It’s going to be much better there.
Woman: In what way? There’ll be a better place for us to have lunch, I hope. The food here is getting worse every day.
Man: I don’t know about that. But from what I’ve seen, there’s going to be a lot more space than we’ve got at the moment and more rooms where we can have meetings.
Woman: Nice. And some sports facilities would be a good idea wouldn’t they?
Man: They would but not at the moment, I’m afraid.
Woman: Oh well. Won’t this move cost a lot of money?
Man: Why should it? I think the idea is to save money.
Woman: Are the offices in a new building or an old one?
Man: Oh, it’s completely new, but it won’t cost nearly as much as the rent on these city centre offices.
Woman: Oh. Are we getting new office furniture, then, to go in this new building?
Man: We are, someone’s designing it specially but even that isn’t really expensive. What is expensive is investing in new computers. Everything is going to be totally up to date.
Woman: Ooh, now that sounds exciting.
Man: It does, doesn’t it? Actually, there’s only one thing that worries me about the move.
Woman: What’s that? Being the only business out at Kenton?
Man: Other firms’ll soon join us when they see how cheap it is in Kenton. Actually, it’s those of us without cars that might have a problem. I don’t think there is much of a bus service. It’s something the company will have to look at.
Woman: And what about shops? A lot of staff like going to the shops in the lunch hour.
Man: Well there are definitely some in Kenton.
Woman: Good!
Man: Actually, Fiona, there is one other rather interesting thing about this move. A lot of people are going over to new working contracts.
Woman: What! And what does that mean exactly? Does it mean we all lose our permanent contracts?
Man: It doesn’t, actually. In this case it means people can set up a sort of office in their home if their work is suitable.
Woman: Uh huh. So it doesn’t mean we have to work longer hours, or something?
Man: I don’t think so.
Woman: John, you seem to know a lot about it. Are you in charge of arranging everything?
Man: I’m very happy to tell you it’s someone else’s job. All I’ve got to do is inform people about the move...
Woman: Mmm - you’re doing very well.
Man: ... except questions about contracts, hours and so on, of course.
Woman: Well, the Personnel Department does that, don’t they?
Man: Exactly. And now I must get on...
