M: I enjoyed your lecture today, Dr. Beech. See you.
W: Goodbye. Oh, Jack?
M: Yes, Professor?
W: Have you got a minute?
M: Uh... sure. Have I done something?
W: No, Jack. Not at all. You’re doing very well indeed in my class, and, uh, I’ve noticed that you seem particularly interested in my research...
M: Thanks! Yes. It seems like fun to be working with primates. They’re very likeable animals, aren’t they?
W: Yes, they are. But they do take a lot of, well, looking after to keep them healthy and happy. I’ve got an assistant, Larry—you know him?
M: Oh, yes, I know Larry, Larry Easton.
W: Yes, that’s right. And he’s graduating in June. So [1]I was wondering if you might be interested in, uh, taking over for him, taking his assistantship.
M: Oh! Uh. Yes. Yes! That’s something I would really like to do, yes. But, uh... I guess I should find out a little bit more about it. I mean, the hours, the time involved, and can I do the work?
W: Well. Have you got a little time right now? Shall we have a talk?
M: Uh, yes. [5]my next class’s not till one. Sure.
W: Good. [2]My research assistant is mostly in charge of maintaining the laboratory animals—preparing their food, cleaning their quarters, uh, feeding and watering them, of course, and, uh, just keeping an eye on things, you know—making sure they’re healthy and comfortable.
M: How many primates do you have in the lab?
W: Twelve right now.
M: Well, it sounds fine, I suppose. What do they eat? Fruit?
W: Yes, [3]fruits, mostly—apples, grapes, pears—and also some vegetables. Lettuce, uh, carrots... we try different things sometimes. And they get mealworms for snacks. Larry’ll show you how to do it.
M: What kind of hours are we talking about, Professor?
W: Well, student assistantships are limited to fifteen hours a week—university regulations. The animals have to be tended every day, of course, but I’ll be responsible for Sundays and holidays. Would you be able to do that?
M: Sure, that sounds fine. My class load’s not so heavy now that I’m in third year. Oh. Uh... can I ask how much it pays?
W: Oh! Sorry, Jack. Of course! [4]Fifteen dollars an hour, $225 a week. The university will withhold some for taxes and issue you a check at the end of each month. It should be for about $850, I think.
M: Great. That’ll help me out a lot with my expenses.
W: OK. Then [5]I’ll talk to Larry, and we’ll see when we can get together, the three of us, and set up some time for you to start learning the routine.
M: Thanks very much, Professor. Thank you for thinking of me.
W: And thank you, Jack. I know I’ll be able to rely on you. See you.
M: See you.
1.Why does the woman want to talk to the man?
2.What is the primary task of the assistant?
3.What do the primates eat for snack?
4.How much does the work pay after tax every month?
5.What will Jack probably do after the conversation?

选项 A、Because she wants to praise his class performance.
B、Because he seems very interested in the research.
C、Because he has done something bad in the class.
D、Because she wants to offer him an assistantship.
