M: You are awarded the CNN Hero of the Year, Ms. Liz. Congratulations!
W: Thank you!
M: Do you feel like a hero?
W: No. I mean I’m surrounded by amazing people every single day who are really, really strong and amazingly hardworking. So I don’t. I mean I think this award is attributed to everybody’s efforts.
M: What do you think the people in St. Bernard Parish think when they see this and hear that you won?
W: Well, I hope they are honored— you know, this award is really about them and their families and their communities. They have suffered so much loss from the storm. What I like to do tonight is to dedicate this award to everybody in the New Orleans area that was affected by this storm.
M: Do you think this is a reminder to a lot of folks that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done there?
W: I surely hope so. I hope the message is loud and clear that while we are making a lot of progress, there’s still a long way to go.
M: Now, you are a celebrity, you know. When we are talking about you, this crowd, and your picture being taken, do you feel that it is unreal?
W: It’s totally weird. You know, I am used to walking around in jeans and T-shirts.
M: As you are the CNN Hero of the Year, you’ll get 100 000 dollars. Do you have a plan for the money?
W: Oh, absolutely, we are rebuilding another ten families’ homes with that money. It’s going right back into the community.
