W: But the problem is we see all these people out there today, with the yachts, with the boats, the planes, the big houses, all of these. And we think we want that too. They look happy; they have all these conditions. How do you explain that?
M: It looks that way. More millionaires, more multi-millionaires, more billionaires than ever, and they have all the toys. But the research also indicates about scale. You can get somebody enough money to take them from poverty to middle class, which makes people happy, but a lot more money, to go from five hundred thousand to five million, doesn’t make them happy.
W: I agree. (6) Money is going to have the more significant impact on those low income individuals. People who have very little are making 20 thousand dollars. They get from 20 to 50 thousand dollars. That’s going to have a big impact on them.
M: That would. But I have never had anybody who comes in and says that he or she needs a little more money. It is all about: do I feel loved, and do I love something in the world. In other words, doing work that does not speak to your heart but makes lots of money is a prescription for disaster.
W: I’ve listened to the surveys of the kinds of jobs that make people the happiest; (7) they aren’t necessarily the jobs that pay the most money. They are things like teachers, social workers, firefighters, not necessarily highly-paid jobs.
M: (8) I will still quote my own psychologist when I was in therapy. He said, the last place you want to be is in the first-class seat on a plane going somewhere you don’t want to go. Absolutely true. It’s really about feeling loved. The people who come to me were in the toughest spots. I am convinced they are well loved, and they are convinced there is something in the world that they genuinely have passion and love for.
W: Good, passion is another thing that makes people happy. Health and passion.
M: Yes. (9) Health is at the top of the list in terms of what makes you happy. Having a good relationship with people, having a lot of very close personal friends, having a good marriage, these are the types of things that make people happy. By the way, the health, money can help you buy happiness there, because money can give you access to the best health care in the world. But you still have to take care of yourselves. It can’t make you healthier. And if you flip that around, then you get to the core of what really makes people happy. Because sometimes you have to take the negative to see that you are content now. So if people were to imagine that their children were not well got for being, then they would realize that they are pretty content even though their cars are years older than they’d like.
W: Yes, no question. Well again, the age-old question. We continue to debate it still. David, thanks.
M: Thank you, Maggie!

选项
A、He doesn’t want to be in the first-class seat on a plane.
B、He doesn’t want to go anywhere by plane.
C、Being in the first-class seat doesn’t make the place people dislike pleasant.
D、Being in the first-class seat doesn’t make people happy.
答案
C
