On July 1, 1859, four men, abundantly supplied with provisions, started on a trip by balloon from St. Louis to New York, at 7:30, in the presence of thousands of spectators, the cords that kept die balloon earthbound were cut, and witii considerable velocity it ascended to the height of three kilometers.
