Should College Students Take Courses Outside Their Major Fields of Study? The major design determines that college education is specialized rather than extensive. Every student ought to choose a specific major, and then study the courses within the restricted field. However, recently it is suggested that universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student’s field of study, for the consideration that acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated. I agree with this opinion for the following reasons. First of all, the ultimate goal of college education is to train graduates to be qualified for their tasks in the future. Most positions require not only the knowledge of one single major, but also information of many other aspects related to the tasks. Students should take various courses related to the tasks they will probably do in the future and thus prepare for their further development. If we have the opportunities to get in touch with such knowledge earlier in school, we’re bound to make fewer mistakes in real practice and avoid detours from success. Therefore, universities should give advice to students about lectures related to the jobs that most graduates of a certain major will participate in according to the real social environment. Second, college is not only a training camp for jobs, but also a platform for college students’ comprehensive development. Students should grasp the opportunities to broaden their horizons to the largest extent. They are so young and energetic that it is the best time for them to learn as much as they can. And there should be some courses beneficial to the overall qualities of students in college, such as art, music, physical education. Thus the college students may have good health, elegant tastes, a variety of knowledge, and efficiency. These are not only important for the training of an employee or a boss, but also crucial for the cultivation of successful human beings. In spite of the reasons above, however, taking too many courses outside their own fields may also distract college students from their own major study. Hence the universities should make appropriate requirements for students to take reasonable courses related to their majors, and to improve their comprehensive qualities.
