Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. Which point of view do you agree with? Write an essay of about 400 words to state your view.
In the first part of your writing you should present your thesis statement, and in the second part you should support the thesis statement with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary.
You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.
Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriacy. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

We Need an Integrative View I believe both points of view, that university students should be required to attend classes and that going to classes should be optional, have merit. However, I don’t think it should be all one or the other, in other words, going from one extreme to the other. I believe the best method would incorporate both of these options. The best method would require university students to attend a certain percentage of classes, with the rest optional. However, this percentage should vary, with the year level of the student. To put it in a specific way, a freshman would be required to attend 80% of classes, with the remaining 20% optional. A Sophomore would be required to attend 60%, with 40% optional; a junior would be required to attend 40%, with 60% optional and a senior would only be required to attend 20%, with 80% optional. The reason why the amount of required attendance goes down with each higher grade is that it’s assumed that the older the student gets, the more able he or she is to exercise discipline, wisely play his or her time and to make good decisions and choices. At the same time making a certain amount of attendance mandatory, it is also good for students to have the freedom and flexibility of increasingly more optional attendance. This acknowledges their increasing maturity and ability to make wise decisions. This tells them that no one is forcing them to attend a class, it’s up to them to make the decision about what is the most beneficial use of their time. When I was in university, a friend of mine often skipped class (I never really asked his reasons, maybe it was just to sleep!), and always borrowed my notes, which were very good and detailed. Unbelievably, he often got a better grade in the exam than I did! In conclusion, it’s best to require university students to attend a certain percentage of classes, and this percentage can decline with the increasing grade level, as their maturity increases and they are better able to exercise sound judgment and make wise choices. Only with this combination of requirement and free choice can a university student best develop his discipline and initiative and fully realize his independent self.
