Over the past decade, DINK (Double Incomes No Kids) has been a life style pursued by an increasing amount of westerners and has influenced people in China in recent years. Some people take it as a perfect choice for Chinese couples simply for the reason that they don’t have to bear the rising costs in tuition, medical care and so on. Others hold the view that DINK goes against the Chinese culture, which considers child as an integral element of a family. What is your opinion? Should we discourage Chinese young couples to be DINKs? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

Should DINKs Be Discouraged? It’s a traditional Chinese belief that there are three ways to be unfilial, of which the worst is to bear no descendants to continue the family line. DINKs in China, therefore, are faced with great pressure from family and society. According to the current situation in China, however, I think we should not discourage Chinese young couples to be DINKs. Firstly, pursuing a DINK life style can spare couples the expenses of raising a child. Reflected in the emergence of home mortgage slaves, card slaves and car slaves are the soaring living costs in China. What holds couples further in bondage is the birth of a child. Baby formula, diapers, tuition fees from kindergarten to college, medical care and insurance, all take a large amount of money. It’s as if the apple of your eyes was gouging your eyes out. Before you know it, you are rushed off your feet trying to pay for your children’s job hunting, housing and wedding. The burdens never seem to end. Secondly, without the restraint of children, DINKs are free to fulfill their life ambitions. We are living in a society where the equality between man and woman is increasingly valued. It’s outdated and primitive to regard a woman as a birth machine which carries on the family line. Young couples in China now are mainly composed of the 1980s generation, most of whom appreciate freedom and personal space. In addition, they don’t necessarily have the ability and patience to provide a favorable environment for a child. All the time and energy consumed by raising a child might as well be saved and better used in aspiring after career success and life goals. Thirdly, when seen from a larger context, DINKs are also somewhat a contribution to relieving the mountainous pressure brought by a rocketing population. That is overpopulation, a problem induced by the encouragement of child birth in the 1950s. According to the 6th national census in 2010, there are approximately 1.4 billion registered residents in China. From the aspect of lowering the birth rate, DINKs are to some extent relaxing the tension of shortage of resources, living space and job opportunities. In conclusion, the life style of DINKs to some extent saves young couples a lot of expenses, gives them more space to realize their life goals and helps to ease the pressure of overpopulation. Therefore, young couples who are not ready for the responsibility of parenting should be allowed to be DINKs.
