China Plans to Delay Retirement Age
China’s top labor official said the country is planning to push back the age at which workers can retire.
Yin Weimin, minister of human resources and social security, explained why it’s essential to raise retirement age:
"The life expectancy of Chinese people is now 73 years and is expected to rise to 74 during the next five years. Nearly 3 out of 10 Chinese people will be older than 60 by 2040, according to a United Nations forecast." he said.
"The retirement age in China currently is 60 for men and 55 for female civil servants and 50 for female workers."
The idea of delaying the retirement age is being widely supported by government officials. Many laborers and non-government employees were less enthusiastic about the prospect of working for longer. Currently, they have to pay into their pension plans for at least 15 years before they can retire.
A female worker Chen Xianlian said, "I have to do lots of tough and repetitive work every day and I feel very tired after my working day. All my colleagues are discussing the government’s possible move to lift the retirement age. None of us wants to work any extra years."
University graduates also fear that any rise in the retirement age could limit their employment opportunities.

答案 To Postpone or not to Postpone With the relatively low retirement age nowadays and the citizen’s longer life expectancy, China is planning to raise its pension age. Many people, especially the government officials applaud the idea of postponing the retirement age while non-government employees don’t welcome the scheme so much, because of their heavier workloads and not-so-good rates of pay. University graduates also fear that delaying the retirement age will deprive them of their opportunities to work. Personally, I’m biased for the idea of raising the pension age. The reasons are as follows. To start with, the 21st century has seen an unprecedented aging population, which means there will be more elderly people above the age of 65. More elderly may signal a heavier financial burden on young workers. Getting those at the retirement age to work will drastically relieve young men’s economic pressure. What’s more, postponing the retirement age will benefit the companies which need highly-skilled and experienced workers to perform certain tasks that are beyond younger workers. As for the old, postponing the retirement age is also of great benefit. Because they can not only make money to support their daily life, but also earn respect by making full use of their treasured talents and skills. In conclusion, population aging raises a critical issue for the whole society, and postponing retirement age is one effective measure to be taken.
