答案 What is listed in the table above shows that dramatic changes have been taking place in the annual expenses in the city of Shanghai during the past 5 years. The expenses on food have decreased by 30%, while those on clothing and recreation have increased 9% and 7% respectively. It seems that the statistics of fall and rise dramatize strikingly the Chinese search for material comfort and luxury in modern society. There may be several forces underlying such changes in annual expenses. A small pro-portion of total income is enough to cover food expense, because the increased income resulting from economic growth may play an important part in the less expense on food. Coupled with the economic growth, the changes in people’s life-styles taking place in the past few years may account for the increase of expenses on clothing and recreation. As food presents no worry to the average, people begin to focus more of their interest on handsome appearance and happy leisure time. Admittedly, these forces are closely correlated to one another. From the analyses made above, it can be safely concluded that people’s living standards in Shanghai have been constantly improved between 2000 and 2004. With further growth in economy and more changes in life-style, the tendency shown in the table will continue in the better direction, even throughout the whole nation.
