答案 Homework Loads of mainland Chinese Students As is depicted in the chart, the average Shanghai 15-year-old students spend an overwhelming 14 hours doing homework per week, almost twice that in Hong Kong, Macao, the Netherlands and the U. S. , four times that in Japan and six times that in South Korea. This shows that mainland Chinese students spend significantly more time studying and doing homework than their counterparts in other countries and regions. Facing the severe competition in examinations, the majority of mainland Chinese students have to burn the midnight oil to do their homework. However, sleep deprivation would lead to a decline in cognitive ability, which means the brains just don’t work properly without sleep. Teens, deprived of sufficient sleep time, will find themselves struggling with memory, learning, planning and reasoning. Furthermore , the young, buried under the piles of assignments, are more likely to feel frustrated and their self-esteem is being affected by time-consuming homework. It’s time to alleviate the burden on primary and secondary students and let them enjoy more discretionary leisure time.
