Today I am going to introduce to you a well-known name Damrosch in the music world. The spelling of Damrosch is D-A-M-R-O-S-C-H. Damrosch is a German name.
The name Damrosch was borne by three men who were important in American music. They were a father and his two sons.
Leopold Damrosch, the father, was born in Posen, Prussia, in 1832. He studied medicine in Germany and became a doctor, but he decided to make music his profession. He had already become an important orchestral conductor in Germany before he went to New York in 1871. In New York he founded the Oratorio Society and the Symphony Society, and was the conductor of both. He also conducted the Philharmonic Society. He died in 1885.
Frank Heino Damrosch, elder son of Leopold, was born in Breslau, Germany. He came to America with his father when he was twelve years old and became an American citizen. He was a choral conductor of exceptional ability, and after several successful years in Denver, Colorado, he became chorus master at the Metropolitan Opera. In 1897 he was made director of music in the New York public schools. He founded the Institute of Musical Art in New York in 1905, and was its director until his death in 1937.
Walter Johannes Damrosch, younger son of Leopold, was born in Breslau, Germany, in 1862. He came to American with his father and became a citizen. He studied music with his father and with the famous conductor Hans Ben Bulow. When Leopold died in 1885, his son Walter succeeded him as conductor of the Oratorio society and the symphony Society, and finished the season as conductor at the Metropolitan Opera. Walter Damrosch was a pioneer in radio. In 1925, he organized the NBC Music Appreciation Hour for school children. He also composed many operas, choral works, and songs. He died in 1950.
