Oaks and maples are big, leafy trees that provide shade, use the sun’s【S3】______ to grow, and give off water vapor that cools the air through evaporation, he explained. Other trees, such as pine and eucalyptus (桉树), naturally emit chemical compounds that【S4】______ to big-city problems, such as ground-level ozone and smog.
To get the most【S5】______ from trees, Quattrochi said, planners should plant in areas that are currently devoid of vegetation, such as shopping mall parking lots and【S6】______ city streets. Also, planting trees on the south and west sides of a home or building will help keep the【S7】______cool during the hottest part of the day, he added, reducing cooling costs.
According to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), more trees in cities can【S8】______ air quality, reduce carbon dioxide emissions,【S9】______ storm-water runoff, and improve community livability.
"Everybody likes trees," Quattrochi said. "They add to the【S10】______ atmosphere of the city. I think urban planners look at planting trees now not only as, this is pretty, but, it’s effective, it’s cost effective."
