The following data sufficiency problems consist of a question and two statements, labeled (1) and (2), in which certain data are given. You have to decide whether the data given in the statements are sufficient for answering the question. Using the data given in the statements plus your knowledge of mathematics and everyday facts (such as the number of days in July or the meaning of counterclockwise), you must indicate whether
A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.
The cards in a deck are numbered consecutively from 1 to 20. If some cards are red and some cards are black, what is the probability of drawing a red card?
(1) The odd-numbered cards are all red.
(2) The even-numbered cards are all black.
选项
答案
C
解析
This is a very deceptive problem. Statement (1) tells us that 10 of the 20 cards are red, but it doesn’t say that those are the only red cards in the deck, so it’s not sufficient on its own and we can eliminate A and D.
The same thing applies to statement (2); it doesn’t say that those are the only black cards in the deck. When we put the statements together, on the other hand, we see the whole picture and know that exactly 10 of the 20 cards are red. So our answer is C.
