A lack of knowledge on breast cancer is causing too much fear and worry among British women. Nearly half of women, who took part in a survey made by the Imperial Cancer Research Fund(ICRF), could not name any of the risk factors for the disease. According to the survey, one in 20 did not know which age group was most weak. Over half of all women in the UK have a poor knowledge of breast cancer. More than 65 percent of the 977 women questioned for the survey said they were worried about breast cancer, but 5 percent of the women knew that from 60 to 80 is the age when women are most likely to develop the disease. Women under 24 and those aged from 65 to 74 were the most poorly informed.
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in developed countries. There are nearly 34,500 new cases is Britain every year and about 14,000 deaths. About one in 12 British women will get the disease sometime during their lifetime. Age, family history, late change of life, late childbearing, very fat and alcohol drinking have all been linked to breast cancer. Early diagnose before the cancer has spread beyond the breast improves the probability of continuing to live.
