The Spring Break
Every year in late April, students at Renmin University of China become the subjects of admiration and jealousy of their peers on other campuses in Beijing. Why? Because they get a week off in the middle of term, the so-called spring break.
"It’s been a unique tradition of our school for a decade," said Wang Yueran, a journalism major student at Renmin University of China, who organized a week-long trip to Sichuan with 12 classmates last year.
But having fun is just one dimension of the spring break. Field trips, voluntary work, and social projects are all on students’ to-do lists. Experts say the spring break is not just for students to enjoy a few days off, but for them to gain new experiences beyond the campus walls.
The traditional Chinese belief of the exploration of knowledge and truth emphasizes "reading 10,000 books and traveling 10,000 miles" , which indicates the importance of experience as much as theory. But while Chinese universities have the tradition of spring outings, what’s the benefit of making the spring break an institution?
"Take traveling for example. A week traveling is a very different experience to a one- or two-day outing," said Qin. "Students are expected to acquire the spirit of teamwork and compromise, and learn survival and communication skills when put out there in an unfamiliar context. "
Many countries have similar vacations in the middle of the semester for students to do things out of their own interest. Taking Japan as an example, instead of partying like their US counterparts, many Japanese students choose to work as interns or engage in study-related projects.
" The spring break is an opportunity for many of our students to put their learning to use," said Hiroshi Kanno, dean of Hitotsubashi University.

Let’s Embrace the Spring Break A prestigious university’s policy of giving students a one-week spring break gains itself applause. Similar to their counterparts in other countries, college students in China can take part in many activities to either broaden their horizons or put their knowledge into practice. From my perspective, the spring break should be institutionalized as a part of university education. To begin with, the spring break can relieve students of their draconian studies. Normally set for a week or so, the spring break offers students many options such as traveling to a faraway city or just staying at their cozy homes to relax. Sandwiched between tense academic life and busy social life, students find themselves easily exhausted and drained. A spring break is a timely balm for their strained minds. Moreover, instead of going to rollicking parties or playing games over sleepless nights, many sensible students choose to spend the spring break being engaged in academic projects as a supplement to their study. For instance, some avid learners opt for a short-term internship to put their knowledge into practice; still others join in some research groups related to their majors which would be grist for the mill in their future careers. In conclusion, the spring break, if not squandered, can prove itself to be a valuable experience for students in many aspects. Therefore, it is high time we institutionalized the spring break as a prerequisite part of college education.
