The Film Adaptations of Literature On the Chinese screens, big or small, we can see many film adaptations of novels or short stories. Indeed, there have been poor adaptations of good works--notoriously, Jin Yong’s Smile at the Martial World by CCTV which simplify, trivialize and distort the original to some extent, among many others. But the adaptation of literary works into visual images is not only a reasonable and exciting activity; it is an artistic venture of its own. When the scriptwriter sticks to the depth and complexity of a work of fiction, and puts his own understanding and vision into it, we have a new and unique work of art. Literature is an introspective art. Those who write it tend to be introspective and most serious readers share this temperament: we are fond of analyzing, and brooding; we don’t like to be told, to be instructed; we tend to be critical, sometimes even skeptical, of external authority. In reading, we "see" for ourselves what characters look like; we "hear" voices. The intelligent and sympathetic reader may help with the creation of the literary work itself--since it demands far more imaginative skills than most other forms of art, and certainly far more than any form of popular entertainment. The visual arts, however, are altogether different. Images predominate. Action and motion attract the eye irresistibly. The importance of words is far less; actors communicate in many ways other than through dialogue, and directors (by close-up or other cinematic techniques) enhance or weaken meaning. There is even--unimaginably for novels or short stories--background music. The main difference between reading a novel and seeing a film, to my mind, is that film commands an authority while novel does not, because it makes its readers passive rather than participatory. Readers are over-whelmed by all sorts of images, sounds, voices, and background music, and have no time of retrospection and thinking. But sometimes it is more exciting and emotional experience to be engaged in the audio and visual demonstration of plots, scenes and characters vivified and liven. Of course, films of literary works lead viewers to books--as the success of The Dream of Red Mansion and Fortress Besieged prove, among others. Film and print are, certainly, competitive media; but there are occasions when they complement one another, and bring readers to books that might ordinarily remain read by a relatively few people.
