New Health Policy: Encouraging Friendships?
Having good social relationships—friends, marriage or children—may be every bit as important to a healthy lifespan as quitting smoking, losing weight or taking certain medications, U.S. researchers reported on Tuesday.
People with strong social relationships were 50 percent less likely to die early than people without such support, the team at Brigham Young University in Utah found. "A lack of social relationships was equivalent to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day," psychologist Julianne Holt-Lunstad, who led the study, said in a telephone interview.
Her team conducted a meta-analysis of studies that examine social relationships and their effects on health. They looked at 148 studies that covered more than 308,000 people for their analysis. Having low levels of social interaction was equivalent to being an alcoholic, was more harmful than not exercising and was twice as harmful as obesity. Social relationships had a bigger impact on premature death than getting an adult vaccine to prevent pneumonia, than taking drugs for high blood pressure and far more important than exposure to air pollution, they found.
"I certainly don’t want to downplay these other risk factors because of course they are very important," Holt-Lunstad said. "We need to start taking social relationships just as seriously."

答案
The Significance of Good Social Relationships Studies conducted by the U.S. researchers find that people having good social relationships are more likely to enjoy a longer life span and a reduction of premature death than those who do not. And I am deeply convinced that having good social relationships is beneficial to both our physical and mental well-being. First, having good social relationships can reduce the risk of many diseases. For example, some studies have revealed that laughter along with chatting to friends is an effective painkiller without side effect. When people laugh, their brains will release chemicals associated with feelings of pleasure, which can ease the pain caused by diseases. Second, good social relationships can make us more competitive in the global market. For one thing, good social relationship means meeting people from all walks of life. So we have to constantly improve our knowledge in order to be competent for different topics. Consequently, this will surely make us more competitive. For another, having good social relationships acquaints us with more friends and contacts that may contribute to our future career success. Third, having good social relationships can release our stress and learn self-respect and appreciate our ability and worth. To conclude, I believe having good social relationships is crucial to our health both mentally and physically.
