Read the texts from a magazine article about the practice of euthanasia(安乐死). For questions 61 to 65 ,match the name of each person to one of the statements ( A to G)given below. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.
Article One:
While Americans consider themselves free to live the lives they choose, most don’t realize that this freedom ends when it comes to selecting a peaceful death over a life filled with unbearable pain and suffering. Euthanasia advocate Jack Kevorkian’s conviction of second-degree murder for assisting in the nationally televised suicide of terminally ill Thomas Youk has shown that, despite great legal successes achieved over the last 25 years, Americans have a long way to go in securing the freedom to die with dignity when confronted by terminal illness.
Article Two:
Interest in the right-to-die issue has become increasingly important as people are now enjoying longer, healthier lives than before. Diseases that kill suddenly and prematurely have been virtually wiped out in developed countries. What are left are conditions that result in lingering, agonizing declines- cancer, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease, to name just a few. Ninety percent of the people who die each year are victims of prolonged illnesses or have experienced a predictable and steady decline due to heart disease and diabetes.
Article Three:
How the terminally ill patients die should be their own choice. They want to make sure that the end of life remains in their control. Just as they write wills to dispose of worldly goods, they want have their say in what is acceptable and what is not. As poet Archibald Macleish said," Freedom is the right to choose ;the right to create for yourself the alternative of choice. Without the possibility of choice and the exercise of choice, a man isn’t a man but a member, an instrument, a thing."
Article Four:
Medicine can keep people alive with artificial organs, transplants, and machines- even artificial food and water--rather than allowing a terminally ill patient a quick death through organ failure. Modern medicine often does more than prolong living--it actually prolongs dying. Therefore, it is a welcome relief for the terminally ill patients to die a peaceful death.
Article Five:
A study of dying patients revealed that 59% would have preferred to receive just care to make them more comfortable in their last days, rather than the aggressive treatment they were receiving. They also identified five aspects of importance at the end of life :receiving adequate pain and symptom management; avoiding prolonged dying; achieving a sense of control; relieving the burden on the loved ones; and strengthening relationships with people.
Now match each of the articles to the appropriate statement.
Note: there are two extra statements.
Statements
[A] The terminally ill patients prefer to make the most of their last days, rather than dying a lingering death.
[B] Compared with a lingering death with the help of medical equipment, a peaceful and quick death is more welcome.
[C] Euthanasia is ruled illegal in most of American states.
[D] With advance of modern medicine, lingering death figures prominently among the suffering patients, thus triggering debate over file right-to-die.
[E] People involved in euthanasia will be deprived of their political rights for life.
[F]The terminally iii patients should be looked on as free individuals, capable to make their choice about their own life and death.
[G] There’s still a long way to go in securing the freedom to die a dignified death.
