Only a few left me an impression of independence." Other local applicants complained that jobs were too far from their homes, or positions were lower than their expectations. Contrary to Shanghai’s pampered single-children, Hu noticed that many non-local applicants showed impressive confidence and professional knowledge. But Hu had to turn them down as the jobs were only open to local applicants. One of the non-local applicants, Jiang Jie from Henan Province, said that he was turned down twice for hotel security positions. "It’s unfair." said Jiang, "Being non-local puts you at a disadvantage."
