Home At the moment, I’m sharing a house with three other young people, but this is only a temporary arrangement and I hope to move into my own flat soon. There’s nothing really special about the house. It has two floors. There are three bedrooms upstairs and we use a room downstairs as another bedroom. I suppose that the best thing about it is the garden, which is small but great now—in the summer, I mean—because we can have some friends over and enjoy a barbecue. The area is great. It’s mainly residential, but there are plenty of small shops and a couple of large supermarkets within walking distance. There’s a park about 20 minutes walk away. It has a pond and plenty of trees with benches underneath. It’s lovely to go there on a warm, sunny day and read a book or watch the ducks on the pond. Definitely. It’s especially good for families with kid, if you ask me. There’s a primary school nearby and a secondary school a short bus ride away. The public transport is quite good—there are three bus routes nearby. It’s a quiet area, without much traffic. Sports The most popular sports in my country are football, skiing and ice hockey. It’s pretty cold in winter and we have many mountains, so winter sports are very common. During the summer, it’s not too hot so football is often played. Other sports, such as mountain climbing and skating are becoming increasingly popular. I like watching skiing and football. The skiers have to be very skilful to go down the mountain slopes at high speeds without falling. They are very athletic. I watch football on TV, but I don’t often go to see a match live at a stadium. The tickets are quite expensive and the seats are often far fxom the pitch, so you actually get a better view on TV. I used to play sports regularly with friends, but nowadays I play far less than I used to. I occasionally play a game of squash with a colleague from work, but he’s much better than me, so it isn’t much fun. In the summer, I might have a game of football with friends in a park near our homes and if I go to the beach on holiday, I like to get involved in a game of beach volleyball. I suppose that I mainly play sports to relax and be with my friends. Playing sports also keeps me fit, but that’s not why I play them. I enjoy spending time with friends. After a game, we usually go for a beer or two to quench our thirst. Absolutely. I used to play football more often when I was younger and I also went skiing every winter. I played on the school football team, but I wasn’t good enough to join the school skiing team. Telephones I carry my mobile phone almost everywhere, but I don’t make or receive many calls. I do send a lot ofmessages using my mobile. It’s cheaper than calling. I often use my mobile to get directiousw hen I’m going somewhere that I haven’t been to before. I don’t use my home phone very often. Members of my family sometimes call me at home and sometimes salespeople call me. Very common. I think that almost every adult has one—even elderly people, A lot of teenagers have them, too. People use them for business as well as for personal reasons. They are certainly very useful items. Well, having a mobile allows you to contact people at any time. This is particularly useful in business. Businesspeople often travel or at least have to go to different offices in a city, so being able to contact them on the move is very useful. As I mentioned before, it can also be extremely useful to be able to contact someone ifyou are going to a new place. It stops you getting lost and being late as a result. Certainly. I went to the cinema yesterday and was very annoyed when someone’s mobile rang during the film. It’s so rode. I mean, most mobiles have a vibrate feature, so that you don’t advertise the fact that someone is calling you or sending you a message. Aside from cinemas, mobiles should be barred from classrooms, lecture theatres, theatres and libraries. In some countries, mobiles cannot be used in designated parts of a train. I think that’s a good idea. Oh, and obviously mobiles can’t be used in aircraft. Well, they all have phone books where you can keep numbers. Most have games. Some have cameras, which I think is a very useful feature. I remember when a friend of mine got lost in my city. When we asked him where he was, he couldn’t tell us. He took a photo of the place and sent it to us. We recognised the place and could tell him where to go. Other mobiles allow you to connect to the Internet.
