W: Prof. Lucas, you said sometimes we put too much faith in communication. Why?
M: It depends on whether you consider communication as sharing ideas or getting people to agree with you. Sometimes we can share ideas, but we can’t get to agreement, particularly in the international realm.
W: So what do you think communication is?
M: I think communication is very important in the present world. (23) Countries are more interdependent than ever before. So it’s important that they talk to each other, and that is communication.
W: Many say that Obama won the presidential election and the Nobel Peace Prize because of his excellence in making public speeches. Do you agree?
M: (24) I agree absolutely that Obama was elected President primarily because of his public speaking, not because of his resume, because it’s a thin resume, compared to that of most world leaders.
W: Indeed.
M: And people in the U. S. were shocked when President Obama won the Nobel Prize, and he seemed shocked himself. Everybody was shocked. The good question was, what has he done?
W: So it was almost like an advance payment given by the Nobel Committee, based on his words but not yet his deeds.
M: Yes.
W: So is that fair for someone with excellence in public speaking win such honor?
M: It’s always been the case that the society think highly of people who are able to communicate their ideas effectively. (25) But at the end of the day,the society is just judging the people not just by their words but by their deeds.
23. What does the man think communication is?
24. According to the man, why was Obama elected President?
25. According to the man,by what standard does the society judge people?
