答案
Commercialisation is accompanied by much more advertising and an increasing proportion of it is aimed at children. This trend has aroused deep concerns among parents, who argue that advertising is harmful to children, while advertisers disagree, contending that advertising is beneficial to children as it is informative. Parents have their own reasons to believe that advertisements put children under pressure and mislead them into bad habits. Admittedly, children are susceptible to attractive promotions, and therefore establish a sense of materialism when they get used to accepting the advertising and wishing to own products like snacks, toys and electronic gadgets. What is worse, children may compare with others actively. Under the peer pressure, children may pester their parents to buy the goods advertised even though they may not actually need them, which in turn would impose heavy financial burden on the family. On the other hand, manufacturers who advertise products claim that appropriate advertising can offer both children and parents so much useful information. They deem that these advertisements can provide potential customers with a comprehensive understanding of the products advertised, which can help consumers make well-informed buying decisions. Since television advertisements can present goods in a visual and audio way, they can definitely enhance consumers’ knowledge of the advertised goods, especially electronic toys and newly-introduced food. I strongly believe that most of the adverting for children has negative effects on them. In order to grab the children’s attention and make profits, some advertisements are actually full of false information, violence and misleading messages. Given children’s susceptibility to the negative impacts of advertising, it is necessary for the authority to regulate advertising that targets at children for their better development.
Discuss both views
