    The highly publicized M22 project, undertaken by the National Transport Department, has drawn to a close. The new highway connecting Barnesworth and Stains has taken around six months to build since construction finally began in March this year.
    The M22 project was the subject of great controversy when it was first proposed in January 2009. While local residents of Barnesworth and Stains were enthusiastic about its capacity to facilitate economic development in the region, environmental activists expressed concern. They suggested that the new highway, which cuts through Langham Forest, could destroy the habitat of the endangered spotted bill bird, potentially driving this native species to extinction. However, activists and government officials eventually reached a compromise, with the original proposal slightly rerouted so that a nature reserve could be established.
    Carl Peters of Varney & Saunder, the contractor who worked on the project, announced that construction is complete. He said that, while the stretch of road still needs to be inspected by traffic engineers and fitted with appropriate signage, it should be open in time for the holiday weekend starting on April 25. An official opening ceremony, which will be attended by Barnesworth Mayor Les Pattison and Stains Chancellor Fiona Du Pont, will be held on April 22. Members of the community are welcome to attend.
