On Job-hopping To hop or not to hop, that is a question. People change jobs much more frequently these days. They believe that job-hopping provides them with a wide exposure to different work environments and increases their experience more rapidly, and in some cases switching jobs have been a faster way of getting a salary raise or finding their niche in early years. Sometimes this works. But it also happens that workers see that the short-term benefits (for example, a quicker salary jump) will not make up for the negative perception that potential employers would have about their constant job-changing habits. Needless to say, one of the things the employers look for in a potential employee is reliability, and they sometimes become reluctant to hire someone who has a history of short employment. From their perspective, short employment might be a sign that the employee is incompetent at his work or that he has difficulty in getting along with his co-workers or that perhaps he quits whenever the going gets tough. So those who are in the habit of job hopping will have to explain how they can be relied on and this can be a liability in job security. In addition, recruiters may not be convinced that employees have gained enough experience and on-the-job skills since they have not stayed in any particular company for very long. What’s worse, recruiters are also worried that frequent job-hoppers may leave shortly after they hire them, forcing them to start the recruiting process all over again. Finally, job hopping is not an end in itself and if you change your job blindly, you may end up in deviating from your original career plan and becoming restless and even cynical when your new job disillusions you. Considering all the above analyses, a conclusion can be safely drawn that changing jobs frequently do you more harm than good. It reflects badly on your reliability and loyalty as an employee. So if you have been in more than three jobs over the last five years, you may need to seriously assess your job-hopping habit. Don’t always take it for granted that the grass is greener on the other side of the hill, instead, think about the experience that you stand to gain from staying on a job and trust and confidence that comes with years of working with your colleagues before you make a change to your new career.
